NINA SAYERS: BLACK SWAN

About the Film:

Black Swan is a psychological thriller that recently released to theaters on December 3rd, 2010 to excellent critical reviews including 4 Golden Globe Award nominations and 3 SAG award nominations. The film stars Natalie Portman in what many are considering the performance of her career. The film raises issues about a ballet dancer's lifestyle and how competition can affect one's emotional stability.

The movie is centered around a Nina Sayers (Portman), a ballet dancer in a prestigious New York dance company who's dream is to be cast as the Swan Queen in the company's annual performance of Swan Lake. When her dream comes true and  she is given the role, which requires the dancer to play both the sweet white swan and the dark black swan, Nina enters an internal battle for her sanity as she struggles to find the sensual edge necessary to play the black swan.

Look 1: Daytime Dance Wear

The first look is inspired by Nina's everyday look at home and at the dance studio. She's always seen in soft hues and pastels in comfortable fabrics like jersey, light knits and cashmere. This look would be suitable for relaxing at home or daytime activities.

-The look is in soft shades of grey and pink much like the outfits Nina wears out, at home and at the studio.

-Simple gray skinny jeans are a staple in Nina's wardrobe and look casual and feminine when paired with other soft hues.

- A flowing cardigan in blush pink is pretty enough for a ballerina and comfortable enough too!

- Layer a charcoal gray tank top under the cardigan for a comfy base.

- This airy scarf is similar to one of Nina's and looks lovely paired with the draped cardigan for an over-all soft silhouette.

-Pink ballet flats are a must for a look inspired by a top ballerina and pull the whole ensemble together quite nicely.

Look 2: Ballerina in the City

This look is inspired by Nina's ensemble when she's out walking the Manhattan streets. Still keeping with soft, feminine hues typical of Nina while adding some "city chic"

-A feather print dress in a soft and classic shape is a charming way to show of a Black Swan inspired ensemble.

-Stay warm in a knee-length wool coat in a light pink color, much like Nina's seen frequently throughout the film.

-Opaque gray tights add to the daytime appeal of a dress and add a dose of one of Nina's most frequently worn shades.

-A charcoal wedge shootie is a more stable walking shoe than heels and looks darling over tights.

-Carry all of your belongings in style with a chic but practical tote.

Look 3: Black Swan Transformation

This nighttime look is inspired by Nina's black swan costume when she performs opening night in "Swan Lake". Put some stylish edge into your going out or party look with inspiration from ballet's most infamous evil twin.

- Take the classic LBD to a whole new level with feathered cap sleeves, a chic calling to Nina's coveted role.

- Patterned tights add edge and texture to the solid backdrop of the dress.

- A netted headband with feather accents is an understated version of the Black Swan's headpiece and completes the whole look.

- Red is an important color in the film to convey Nina's inner dark side and adds a great pop to the ensemble in a pointy-toed pump.

- A double finger ring of a swan's wings is a clever way to call to the outfit's cinematic inspiration in a pretty conversation piece.
