ANNIE: ANNIE HALL

About the Film:

This all-time classic romantic comedy starring Woody Allen and Diane Keaton took the Academy Awards by storm  in 1977 with 4 wins including best picture and best director. The story revolves around a nervous political comedian, Alvy Singer (Allen) and his relationship with the quirky and lively Annie Hall (Keaton). The film, considered one of if not Woody Allen's most popular film he's directed, is praised for it's honest portrayal of relationships and their cycle. Annie Hall's menswear inspired style remains on of the most influential examples of fashionable androgyny on film with instant popularity in street style upon the film's release as well as continued inspiration today.

LOOK 1: Crisp and Comfy

- A textured trouser in a neutral shade like gray is comfortable and a staple of Annie's and one that any woman would benefit from having in her closet.

-A cotton button down shirt in a dilute plaid is the perfect addition to a menswear inspired ensemble like Annie Hall's. Look for one that's fitted, accentuating the feminine shape. Fitting is key in a menswear inspired look to keep it chic and not frumpy.

-A simple black cardigan in a simple classic that adds finish to the look. Look for one that's fitted or cropped to balance out the volume of the trousers on the bottom.

- Black oxford flats are frequently worn by Annie and look great with the above look!

LOOK 2: Classic Annie

-What Annie Hall inspired collection is complete without a waistcoat? This vest is simple, has great detailing (buttons, pockets, buckles etc) and is in a awesome neutral color (typical of Annie's ensembles).

-A white button-down shirt is a must for anyone who wants to get Annie-inspired fashion fast. A collared shirt is a great layering piece and translates into a variety of ensembles.

- Show off your shape with a pair of high-waisted pleated shorts in a coordinated shade. The trouser-like elements offer polished androgyny while the high waist and short hem shows off the figure.

- Brown oxford flats are classic Annie and are comfy and cool.

- Annie is often seen wearing hats, including a black fedora. This one is a classic model with a wide band, similar to one Annie's seen wearing in the film.

LOOK 2: Literature Class

- A fitted plaid blazer is quirky and reminiscent of the 70s when the film takes place.

- Layer a lightweight black turtleneck top for a clean palette.

- A pair of light khaki skinny jeans are sleek and in a shade that is typical for Annie to wear.

- Tan oxford inspired ankle boots are trendy but look great with a narrow bottom like the skinny jeans.

- Annie is often seen wearing aviator sunglasses and the effortless cool vibe they have contrasts nicely with the buttoned-up feel of the ensemble.

CHUCK: PUSHING DAISIES

About the show:

This quirky and charming dramedy television series was rather short-lived with only 2 seasons (2007-2009) aired however the series has gained a band of dedicated fans that can't help but fall in love with the sweet band of characters. The shows events center around Ned (Lee Pace) and his sweetheart Charlotte Charles (Anna Friel), also known simply as "Chuck". Ned, a talented baker and pie shop owner, discovers at a young age that he has the power to revive the recently deceased with one touch, but with a second the victim returns (permanently) to their departed state. He teams up with a detective to put his gift to good use to solve murder mysteries by temporarily bringing back murder victims long enough to be told who their killer was and put justice in its place. Complications however arise when Chuck, whom Ned has hopelessly fallen for, is murdered. He brings her back to life and they fall in love but with one catch...they can never touch.

LOOK 1: Floral Chic

Chuck is no stranger to a feminine floral ensemble. This one is a sweet daytime look that would be perfect in the springtime (it's not too far away!). Chuck is notorious for matching in her looks, so take her cue but keep it interesting with varying shades of pink.

- A voluminous paper bag skirt in a bright coral shade is feminine while the high waist sticks with the retro look that is signature of Chuck.

- Vintage inspired floral print in a tank top adds a shot of traditional charm.

- Add a little warmth for spring with one of Chucks favorite pieces: the cardigan. This one's blush tone and floral appliques coordinates nicely with the floral print of the tank.

-Darling t-strap flats in a distressed white are sweet and comfortable.

-Hint to warmer weather with a casual daytime appeal with a simple straw handbag.

Look 2: Sweet As Pie

Consistently throughout the series Chuck is seen in cheery and bright ensembles. Color is one of the most notable elements of her costume design. Channel that cheer with a bright and girly outfit like the one below.
Dress: Dehlia'sCardigan: DebenhamsShoes: TopshopBracelet: JCrew, Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters

-A bright yellow dress is the perfect base to any sunny ensemble and this one with it's simple yet flattering cut and eyelet detailing would be a great versatile piece appropriate for a variety of occasions.

-A simple periwinkle blue cardigan compliments the yellow dress while letting the texture shine.

-Enjoy sunny days with cat-eye sunglasses: the perfect dose of retro glamour.

-Satin ballet flats are simple and easy to walk in yet still look polished.

-Keep with the simplicity and retro vibe of the look with a pearl bracelet to finish it off.

Look 3: Classic and Quirky

Make heads turn in a bright and bold red dress, accessorized with some of of Chuck's signature whimsy for a look that no one  will soon forget!
Dress: ModClothScarf: TopshopHeels: YesstyleEarrings: Supply Co, Mascara: Maybelline

-A dress in a classic 1950s inspired cut cinches the waist and the bold red color (a favorite of Chuck's) is a romantic statement piece.

-One of Chuck's signature accessories is a head scarf, tie a cute printed one up in your hair for a weather-proof 'do.

- Matching her pumps to her dress is a favorite look of Chuck's, and these are tres adorable with their little scarlet bows on the heel.

- Daisy stud earrings are a cute nod to the show's title and look oh-so-sweet.

-Swoop a couple coats of volumizing mascara on your lashes for an extra dose of glam.

ALEX OWENS: FLASHDANCE

Alex Owens. Welder turn star dancer and also started some of the most iconic trends of the 80s that have carried through to modern times.

You know those leg warmers? What about that sweatshirt slumped off one shoulder? Or ripped jeans? Well, you have Flashdance to thank.

Alex is the perfect example of how to look good without trying too hard. Pay attention to her style to know how to dress comfortably and look cute and fun at the same time.

Here's some examples of looks typical for Alex:

Color Palette:
Neutrals like grey and black with dashes of bright color.

Style Influences:
Heavy influence from dance-wear, also some menswear styles.

Key Features:
Leotards. More than merely dance-wear but also a fun fashion piece.
Off-the-shoulder sweatshirts. The famous grey one Alex wears is classic but any shade is a great way to incorporate Alex's style into your own look.
Ripped, distressed jeans.Use these as an opportunity to balance your outfit . Tighter, more fitted top? You can let your jeans be worn a little looser like Alex does. For bigger sweatshirts or tops try a more fitted style of jean.

Accessories:
Bright or neon accents. 80s style was all about a big statement, so a pop of bright color stays true to the era and adds an element of interest.
Legwarmers. Dancer or not these remain a style staple of the 80s that has made a reappearance in modern fashion.
Bold and feminine jewelery. Tone down the ultra-casual effect of the style with pretty earrings, bracelets, hair pieces etc that are big enough to make an impact.

Now lets look at some examples of Alex-Inspired outfits that you could put together!

OUTFIT #1

This outfit is inspired by Alex's most iconic look. Try wearing this when hanging out or going to a movie with friends.

  • This lightweight grey sweatshirt is already made with a wide neckline, which is more polished than one cut yourself making appropriate for a wider variety of occasions. Also try with skinny jeans to make it party appropriate.

  • A sheer lace tank top looks pretty and feminine peek out from underneath the sweatshirt while incorporating a modern trend.

  • Simple black leggings are a great staple to any girl's wardrobe, when wearing under a sweatshirt or long shirt look for a heavy pair or buy a size bigger to avoid possible transparency.

  • A fun, bright flat is pretty and brings a little punch.

  • Big silver hoop earrings bring a touch of glam to an ultra-casual look.
OUTFIT #2

This outfit shows how to incorporate dance-wear into your style in a fun and casual-cute way for a great daytime look.

  • A long-sleeved cotton leotard in black and white skinny stripes helps the piece transition from dance-wear to everyday fashion.

  • Have Alex's ripped work jeans look in mind with a pair of distressed denim shorts.

  • A trucker cap adds some sassy style.

  • Give another nod to dance-wear with a pair of jazz-flat oxfords. Look for cute detailing like these sequined toes.

  • A sweet pair of lacy bobby socks adds feminine appeal to counteract the simplicity of the other elements.
